Ancient Rome

This month we are busy learning about Ancient Rome.  Third graders have learned about the Roman republic, Gods and Goddesses, the Punic wars and the daily life of the Plebeians and Patricians.  They designed Roman shields too!  Here are some pictures of their creations!

5/12-5/15

We have officially made it to the end of our distance learning time! I have added our last assignments in reading, math, writing and science.

This week, we will have two very special google meets.  On Tuesday, we will take a virtual trip to Disney World.  Our class will ride a few rides and complete learning activities on our trip.  I will present it in a slide-show format with videos. This meet may take a little longer.

On Wednesday, Mrs. Dick will be having a Spanish meet with you.  No personal meets this week for me.

On Thursday, you will have your last PE google meet with Mr. Wester.

Friday is the grand finale meet!  I will announce awards and we will watch a slideshow with pictures from our school year together.

It has been a wonderful year, even with our distance learning challenges!  I am excited to reconnect with each of you when school begins again!

May 4th-8th

Can you believe the date on the title of this post?  It is already May!  This week marks the second to last full week of school.  School will look the same this week, with regular google meets.

Tomorrow is Viking Saga day!  A guest storyteller will present the oldest known Viking story to our class. Hint….it has a dragon in it!

3rd graders will be sharing their biographies on Friday.  Students are invited to dress up as the person they researched during our meet!

I hope you have a wonderful week!  Please be sure to check out all of the new assignments.  I have added some podcasts to science this week!

Also, please keep emailing me your distance learning pictures.  I am building an end of year slideshow…….More on that next week! 🙂

4/28-5/1

It is so hard to believe that we end this week in May.  Where did the school year go?  I have loved having individual meets with my 3rd graders.  It is such a wonderful way to feel connected during this strange time!

In honor of Poetry month, I have included some Shel Silverstein activities.  Look for them in the writing assignment section.  I love his poetry, it reminds me of my own childhood! I remember memorizing “Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would not Take the Garbage out” When I was in the 4th grade. I’m pretty sure I put a banana peel on my head during the presentation. I would love for my kiddos to share their Sylverstein style poem on Friday.

This week, there is also an opportunity for your 3rd grader to research someone for a biography report.  Third graders will also be writing an opinion piece about someone who is an important hero. There is also a Nova letter to Aubrey this week and a short imaginative paragraph.

Reading topics will explore finding the main idea, and the text structure of compare and contrast.  For math, our class will continue with Zearn and area.  Practice work will center on time and area of rectangles.

Earth Day Week

Earth Day falls on April 22nd. This year is a bit different but we can all do our part, even during the quarantine.  I usually have my class participate in a school clean up or we plant trees. You could still do this around your house or yard!

This week, I have included assignments in reading, writing and math that focus on Earth Day.  There are also a few new ideas under the Inquiry and Fun Stuff tab.

Have a wonderful week!

April 14-17

It’s our 4th week of distance learning!  This week we will learn more about text features, Read Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, and an interesting book on A-Z about animals.

For math, we will also practice adding money using the decimal point, play a multiplication battleship game, solve a division word problem, and continue our fraction mission on Zearn.

We will create a futuristic narrative story, write a NOVA letter to our dear friend Sage, and practice cursive in writing.

The project this week is all about creating your own animal or plant with interesting adaptations! Check out the cool link that I added in the Science assignment tab!

As always, the tabs for assignments are located under each subject heading. Remember, the scope for the week is emailed on Tuesdays.  In this email, I will give a recommended time-line for assignments.  This week, I will give a lesson on using the decimal point to add money and go over the “description” text feature in our google meets.  I will include the link in the email.

I will also send an email to your child this week with a link to a read aloud.  I am currently reading The Tale of Despereaux.  Please be sure your 3rd grader’s email is up and running.

We had some awesome viking shields last week!          Viking shield

And Geometric designs:

I’ll keep adding more this week!

April 7th-April 10

I have added assignments this week. Please check each tab!  There is a new assignment under the Science and Social Studies tab. Remember to hover over the subject and the assignment link will show up.  All assignments can be found there!

This week, I have also included a couple of projects.  Your 3rd grader will be designing a Viking shield and creating a geometric design.  Look under the Math and Social Studies tab.

Have a wonderful week!  I will send a message out on Tuesday morning that has all of the links for our Google meetings.

Don’t forget to check the Specials tab!

Welcome to our class blog!

I will be sharing class updates, assignments and links for resources on this page. Each subject is listed at the top of the blog. Please select the tab to see the drop down menu for all remote learning assignments.  It will be helpful to have some paper on hand for the writing and reading assignments.

I would like for the class to do one assignment per day in each subject.  IF your child wants to do more on the learning websites like Reading A-Z or Zearn, that is fine!

The inquiry and fun stuff tab has some extra projects that your 3rd grader to do if they wish.

“Hang in there”  We got this!  You can scan or photograph all work and email it to me at jhamilton@mssd14.org
