Writing

Third grade writers dive deep into writing workshop.  We learn how to generate narrative, opinion and expository sentences that build paragraphs.  Our class also explores poetry and each child learns how to write in response to reading.

This process includes:

  1. Brainstorming ideas-Using a graphic organizer such as a web, timeline list or T-chart
  2. Organizing ideas-Taking those ideas and putting them in an order that makes sense
  3. Drafting/writing-building sentences and paragraphs
  4. Revising- changing sentences and words to make it more interesting
  5. Editing-using COPS or Capitalization, Organization (does my writing make sense?), Punctuation, Spelling
  6. Publishing & sharing

What are the main types of writing done in 3rd grade?

Narrative- Tells a story!  It could be about a personal experience or a fictional story

Opinion- How the writer thinks or feels about something.

Expository or informational- Facts about a topic
